Hurricane Irene

I pick up and move to NYC and what do I get?

An earthquake and a hurricane in the same week …

I’m so lucky. I knew this one-way ticket thing would be a good story. So far it has been.

At least I’m staying in the 5th story of an area out of the evacuation zones, but the winds will be strong and the rain will be heavy. Plus, even though there are evacuation zones, a hurricane won’t stop at lines so it’s always good to be prepared.

I have water. I have food. The stores are insane right now and it’s impossible to buy a flashlight. At least I got a variety pack of candles. The scents might be in battle with one another, but it will be good to have light for a little bit. Oh, and I found playing cards, because when the power goes out, the Netflix party ends, and we are left to our own devices including relying on those old fashioned games. Gin rummy anyone? I used to be a mad War player …

At least I’m sleeping on an air mattress so if anything happens, I’ll float.

I hope to take some photos and video as much as I can without getting blown away by the heavy winds. I met a guy who is going to be on his rooftop in a Speedo to watch it all go down…. Everyone has their own way to celebrate I guess. My friends are coming over and spending the weekend here so at least I won’t be lonely. Actually at the grocery store I felt far from lonely as everyone is there for the same thing. It’s a communal experience preparing for a hurricane. I bonded with some folks of Crown Heights today.

I’ll keep you updated with what goes down.
