Temping

I’m sitting in an office at a desk.

It’s temporary work. Temping. I take over a person’s life for a couple of weeks, do their job and get paid for it. It’s not glamorous, but it’s work. It’s the regular filing, answering phones, copying work, but the people are really wonderful. Plus, I’m on the 25th floor and have a beautiful view of watertowers and buildings. Feels very “New Yorky.”

What also feels great is joining the workday commute. You might not think that crowding into the subway would feel so special, but it feels good to me to be a part of the bigger working group. I’m particpating. In fact I celebrated Labor Day by working and producing a segment for WNYC.

I’m a per diem for the nationally-syndicated morning talk show called The Takeaway produced in partnership with PRI, The New York Times and WNYC. I’m an assistant producer meaning I place calls to book the show and seek out great guests for the program. I preinterview them, type up their responses and write a script for the host. It’s really rewarding work. Each day I’m there, I’m learning a ton. It’s dense work, quick work and requires a lot of energy and perseverance. You can hear some of my segments here.

Meanwhile, I have a few other opportunities floating around out there. Now, it’s just a matter of timing, luck and what would you know … more perserverence. Until then, I’ll answer the phone with a smile.
